New York requires an approved 81-hour training course before you can sit for the Security & Fire Alarm Installer licensing exam. Here’s what the course covers, what it typically costs, and how to prepare before you walk in.
Approved courses are structured around the same five subject areas tested on the state exam: standards/codes/basic electronics, control panels and transmission, security systems and license law, fire alarm technology, and servicing/maintenance.
The 81-hour course typically costs between $1,500 and $2,500 depending on the approved training provider. After completing the course and passing its module tests, you’ll also pay a $15 NYS Department of State exam fee and a $185 license application fee if you pass.
The course compresses a lot of material into a short window. Reviewing the terminology and core concepts — Ohm’s Law, wiring types, code references, detector technologies — before day one means less time spent decoding vocabulary and more time absorbing how it applies.
NYS Alarm Prep is a $79/month independent study platform — module-based study guides, 1,000+ practice questions, and a 400-question final exam bank — designed to be used before, during, or after the 81-hour course. It is not a substitute for the course and is not affiliated with any specific training provider.
Once you’ve completed the approved course and its module tests (70% passing on each), you sit for the NYS Department of State licensing examination, also requiring a 70% passing score, plus a background check before a license is issued.
