Getting licensed as a Security & Fire Alarm Installer in New York State involves several required steps beyond just passing an exam. Here’s the full process, in order, along with where NYS Alarm Prep fits in.
You must be at least 18 years old to apply for a NYS Security & Fire Alarm Installer license.
New York requires completion of an approved 81-hour training course covering all 5 modules: standards/electronics, control panels/transmission, security systems/license law, fire alarm technology, and servicing/maintenance. Courses typically cost $1,500–$2,500 and require passing each module test at 70% or higher.
After completing the course, candidates sit for the state licensing examination, which requires a 70% passing score. The exam fee is $15 (nonrefundable).
Applicants must pass a background check, including fingerprinting, as part of the licensing process.
The final step is submitting a license application with the required fees ($185 application fee) to the NYS Department of State Division of Licensing Services.
NYS Alarm Prep is an independent $79/month study and practice platform covering the same 5 modules required for the course and exam — useful before you enroll, during the course, and while preparing for the state exam. It does not replace the required course, background check, or application process.
