Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is NYS Alarm Prep?

NYS Alarm Prep is an independent study and practice platform for the New York State Security & Fire Alarm Installer licensing process. It includes study guides for all 5 modules, over 1,000 practice questions with detailed answer explanations, and a 400-question final exam bank.

Q: Is this the official 81-hour course?

No. NYS Alarm Prep is not the official 81-hour course and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to the New York State Department of State or any specific course provider.

Q: Does it replace the required course?

No. The 81-hour pre-licensing course is mandatory under New York State law and cannot be replaced by any study platform. NYS Alarm Prep works alongside the required training.

Q: Can I use it before the course?

Yes. Many people study Module 1 before enrolling to preview the material and confirm the career path is right for them.

Q: Can I practice by module?

Yes. Each of the 5 modules has its own study guide and 200-question practice bank, usable independently in any order.

Q: What does the $79 subscription include?

Full study guides for all 5 modules, 1,000+ practice questions, a 400-question final exam bank, unlimited randomized practice attempts, detailed explanations for every answer, and weak-topic tracking. Cancel anytime — all payments are final and non-refundable once access is granted.

Q: Does it include practice questions?

Yes — over 1,000 practice questions across the 5 modules, plus a separate 400-question final exam bank, all with explanations.

Q: How many questions are on the NYS alarm installer exam?

The exact exam format should be confirmed with the NYS Department of State or your approved training provider. NYS Alarm Prep focuses on the five-module content areas and provides timed practice so you can build recall across the topics most candidates need to review.

Q: What license do I need to install fire alarms in New York?

New York generally treats fire alarm and security alarm installer work under the Security and Fire Alarm Installer licensing framework. Confirm your specific situation with the NYS Department of State, especially if you may qualify for an exemption or already hold another license.

Q: How do I study for the NYS alarm installer exam?

Study one module at a time, then use active recall through practice questions. Review every missed answer against the underlying study section, then finish with mixed timed practice across all five modules.
